Reflections on the Olympics

I have known two Christian high school girls who excelled in their chosen sport to the point of having to make the decision whether to pursue "the gold." Each had made contact with the best coach and were encouraged to continue. Both girls decided that the commitment of time, resources, and effort was not going to help them to achieve their life long goal of serving the Lord.
Seeing the superhuman efforts of the Olympian athletes is awe inspiring. Some have reaped millions of dollars in product endorsements. All have had their day in the limelight whether they won a medal or not. We admire them. They help teach lessons in perseverance and hard work.
I see that I and perhaps everyone can learn from these amazing athletes. I ask, have I "run the race" with every ounce of my being? Have I used my God-given gifts for His glory? Have I given my all? Imagine what an impact we would have if all Christians were the "living sacrifices" that Paul told the Romans to be. The early Christians did change the world. With God's help and our submission to Him, we can too.

As much as I like watching the Olympics, I always have the same thoughts that you voiced. As a result, I always am resolved to never intentionally start a child on such a journey as that.
