Short Takes

Fill-er-up!
Whether you called it a "filling station," a "gas station," or a "service station" it was not self serve. A friendly attendant would come to your car and ask, "How may I help you today?" You would reply, "Fill her up." That would mean that the attendant started the gas flowing into your tank, then checked your oil and washed your windows. Some would even check your tire pressure.
Of course, we poor young drivers could not always afford a full tank, so we would request $1 worth of gas. That could get us home with the hope that Dad would fill her up. Even so the attendant would wash the windshield at least, or do a "full service."
Those "full service" stations of old allowed you to gas up with all the other services without ever leaving the comfort of your car. The attendant did appreciate a tip.

I think I would like full service again. I really, really do - especially when it's c-o-l-d!
