First grade ushered in new experiences. I think I taught myself to read, but also really enjoyed the "Dick and Jane" books. I was excited to learn how easy it was to count to one hundred. My favorite thing was getting to draw pictures that went with writing that I did. I don't remember whether I wrote, or merely copied what I wrote. Penmanship was easy for me. My teacher was impressed with my drawing ability, and thought I should take art lessons.
I didn't know what the problem was, but I was just beginning to experience frustration with reading. It was many years later that I learned I had a vision problem.
A side note: I remember all my teacher's names through fifth grade. Kindergarten was Mrs. Wiesen, first grade was Mrs. Schafer, second grade was Mrs. Caldwell, third grade was Miss Hanson, fourth grade was Mrs. Jetter, and fifth grade was Mrs. Wilson.
