Short Takes

Candy
When I was a kid and money was in short supply, candy was a rare treat. When I was old enough to have an allowance, candy was one of my priorities, unless I was saving up for a bike or gift giving.
Candy treats that are no more may surprise you. Necco, which is still making wafers and valentine message hearts made candy cigarettes. They came packaged like a pack of cigarettes. One end of the cylinders had red coloring on it. I remember holding each "cigarette" between my index and middle fingers just like real smokers did and thinking it was cool to pretend to blow smoke rings in the air. There were various items made of wax with sweetness added. Little wax Coke bottles filled with a tiny bit of coke syrup had the advantage of doubling as chewing gum when the sweetness was gone. Another wax novelty was red lips you held in your mouth so that it looked like you had huge bright red lips. They were a Halloween staple. There was another sweet that may have been made by Necco too. They were little dots about 1/4th inch diameter stuck to a sheet heavy waxed paper about 5" X 7". I remember them being red, but I think they may have come in white too. One of my favorite candy bars was called "Seven up." It was actually 7 pieces of chocolates like in a box of chocolates, that were held together by the chocolate coating.
My dad brought home from his travels memorable treats. One time it was little candy nougats shaped and colored like fruits and vegetables. They were called marzipan and were almond flavored. One night about 3:00 am I was awakened by Dad coming into my room and offering me to choose a rock to eat. He had just come home on the train and I thought he had lost his mind. What he had found were actually rock shaped and decorated jelly beans.
Some of my favorite candies over the years have been Heath bars, Butterfingers, Honey Nougats, Walnettos, licorice, Three Musketeers, and Reeses Peanut Butter Cups.
Now it is your turn. What are your sweet treat memories and favorites?

My favorite used to be Snickers until I'd eaten too many. ;-) I remember grandma and granddad gave my a whole box of them once. Now, I'd take just about anything chocolate since I've deprived myself for so long. It would probably be some sort of dark chocolate.

Your "Short Takes" are quite interesting. Thanks for sharing them! As a child, my favorites were Mounds and Peppermint Patties. And lemon drops. I remember taking some allowance money and buying a bag of lemon drops at the Variety store on the way home from school. I would stash it under my bed and dole myself out some of them periodically. I also remember the candy cigarettes, too. The whole idea of those is pretty disgusting today, isn't it!
