Memory Snippets

Being Nine
I know I had a bad case of schoolitis. I don't remember when it started. I remember not being able to eat before going to school. I was told after I was an adult with children of my own that I was given phenobarbitol to calm me enough to make it to school. I do not understand why I was so nervous as I loved learning. Perhaps it started during the rough time I had in kindergarten.
That being said, my fourth grade year was the pits. My teacher was not very nice it seemed to me. The only memory that stands out is the saga of the Thanksgiving play. I don't remember if it was a school wide program or just a fourth grade event. I was given a small speaking part. I simply could not memorize it. After much consternation I was allowed to not participate in the play. I was given a chair in front of the audience facing the stage. From there I could give cues when needed because I had the whole play memorized with the exception of the part I had been given.
