Memory Snippets

The Attempted Hold-Up
I don't remember exactly how old we were, but it had to have been before I was ten. My younger brother and I walked about ten blocks to the nearest Reed's ice cream store. It was dusk when we left home, but was getting dark when we left the ice cream store. It was the first time we had been allowed to go that far alone. As we started for home with a quart of ice cream and some change in my brother's pocket, a teenage girl walking with crutches approached us. We were not afraid as we thought she may need help or something. To our surprise, as she came near, she brandished a long knife, and demanded our money. I froze in panic, but my brother told her we did not have any money. He grabbed my hand and nearly dragged me along as we ran for home. We noticed that the girl took off running in the opposite direction. Our parents drove around looking for the girl, but did not find her.
This was one of many occasions when I was proud of my brother. I don't know what would have become of me had I been alone.

Sometimes brothers just have a presence of mind that girls lack. JW bailed Elizabeth out of one jam or another it seems.
